About the Online RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Course

Do you love the idea of learning navigation and skippers skills but don't have 40 hours free to spend in a classroom? 

This course will give you the skills to confidently read and interpret charts, weather and tides in both the Northern and Southern ​Hemispheres​​​​​​. It provides a fantastic base of knowledge for taking your boat from Sydney along the east coast of Australia.

What's in the course?

• Understanding your safety and legal obligations as a skipper;
• Knowing where to find Weather forecasts and interpreting them;
• “Learning to see” through chartwork, and deciphering lights & buoyage;
• Avoiding collisions with the aid of traditional and modern tools, from a hand bearing compass thought to AIS alerts and DSC calling;
• Escape the beaten track, learn how to navigate into secluded anchorages and be confident you are using all tools at your disposal to remain safe while you are there;
• Make tide your friend, understand your currents and tides and how to use them to your advantage during your adventures;

Course Information

Course Structure

The course is recognised by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and follows the Day Skipper Shore based Syllabus. The drive for us to develop a course locally in Sydney was to be able to support the training and development of the East Coast Skippers who wanted real-life case studies. We have included examples for managing the East Australian Current, Wide Bay Bar, the prevailing NE winds to work up the NSW Coast line, avoiding unfavourable tides during their Whitsundays Cruising and much more. The framework of the RYA Course has been used with practical Australian based case studies, pictures and examples wherever possible to ensure you finish the course feeling confident to plan an East Coast adventure.

Course Duration

The course takes around 40 hours in total to complete, but it is structured so you can take it at your own pace.

Previous Experience

Ideally you would have completed the Essential Navigation and Seamanship Course to set your skill foundation for this course. We are really happy to help and want to make sure you are on the best course for your current skills and future goals so please check in with us if you are unsure which course is the most appropriate for you.

Examinations

To complete the course and receive the certificate there are two short examinations for you to sit. You sit them in your own time and if for some reason you do not pass first time, we go through everything with you and give an opportunity to sit again, once you feel ready.

The Investment

The course cost is $650 AUD. Access to the course is open for 12-months from completing the registration. If life gets too busy and you need more time, you have an option to pause your course for up to 6-months and then continue when you have more time.
